Announcing the Angels' Nectar River Spey Cask Race

We are pleased to announce the inaugural Angels’ Nectar River Spey Cask Race. Inspired by daredevils such as Annie Edson Taylor (pictured) who plunged over the Niagara Falls in a barrel in 1901, and with a nod to the loggers who used to float timber down the Spey, we will be hosting the Angels’ Nectar River Spey Cask Race for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival on the 1st of May.

The race will involve floating down a section of the Spey inside former whisky casks. Renowned cooper Hoggie McChip is currently adapting twelve casks for the race, adding a hatch, a port hole, oars, and a seat with a cushion in each cask.

Whilst there will only be twelve places, no prior experience of the exciting sport of River Cask Racing is necessary.

After a briefing and training by Canadian champion Chuck Pilar the competitors will be sealed into their casks and the casks then launched into the river Spey at Aviemore. The section of the Spey from Aviemore to Boat of Garten will be a warm up, with the race running from Boat of Garten to Grantown-on-Spey. Spectators are welcome, and we expect the section at Broomhill Bridge to be particularly exciting.

Up for grabs for the winner is a bottle of our Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms 3rd Edition, our latest single cask Speyside single malt Scotch Whisky bottled in partnership with the Cairngorms Trust, to support environmental and community projects in the Cairngorms National Park.

In addition, as the race will form part of the River Cask Racing world series, the winner will also be named Scottish River Cask Racing Champion, and be eligible to enter the World Championship on Canada’s Kicking Horse River in August.

We will be announcing how to enter the Angels’ Nectar River Spey Cask Race shortly. To ensure you receive the details, please subscribe to our mailing list by clicking here.
